The first love bite is most remembered and the craving for more can go a long way. Trishna restaurant tells a tale of love for Northern Indian Cuisine. This restaurant captures a conceptual love story between man and good food. Each of its dishes is interestingly cooked with garden-fresh spices and natural ingredients to capture its best original taste.

First up! The famous yoghurt drink which we called the “Lassi”. Sweet and Mango Lassi are two of the most common ones, but have you tried Salted Lassi before? My first time trying and it was remarkably good!

Their Papadum is different than the others I must say. Every crunchy piece of it is flavoured with Indian spices instead of just a thin layer of crispy flour.

Not forgetting to drizzle some refreshing mint sauce on it! *crunch*

Established in 2008, Al-Amar Lebanese Cuisine Restaurant has made an impact on the KL dining area with its delectable cuisine and warm ambient surroundings in the heart of the city. Stepping through its doors, you are transported into a unique ambience not dissimilar to fine-dining havens found in Lebanon. Pristine white tablecloths and plush red chairs lend a city chic atmosphere and hints of modern Lebanese flair. It may not look the same in the pictures that I’ve taken here as I was invited to sample the festival menu at their headquarters instead. But trust me, you will love their restaurant in Pavilion as much as I do.

Al-Amar’s cuisine, born out of its proprietor’s longing for food from home, is a combination of traditional hot and cold mezzes, grills, salads and desserts. It is further elevated with an extensive wine menu including special collaborations with Chateau Musar and Chateau Kefraya, renowned wineries from Lebanon, providing a complete Lebanese dining experience.

Let’s take a look at their festival menu this year that creatively comes in a “Four Seasons” course meal specially designed by Chef Michel Karam himself.

For a “Sunny Start”, we were served with an authentic Labneh Trio with Lebanese Southern Tapenade and a Brush of Thyme. Best paired with Chateau Musar Jeune White, Viognier, Corsican variety, Vermentino and Chardonnay, 2008, Lebanon.

Then comes the “Summer Blooms”, Apricot Glazed Beetroot Tartar on Mango Leather and Rocket Coulis. Best paired with Chateau Kefraya Blanc de Blanc, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay, 2008, Lebanon.

It was such a great pleasure to be invited to be on the scene of the Malaysian International Gourmet Festival Gala Launch 2011 just last week.

More than two thousand of the country’s “who’s who” gathered in the Grand Ballroom of Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, to celebrate the start of the region’s most anticipated fine dining event – The Malaysia International Gourmet Festival (MIGF).

Royal Patron YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tunku Ja’afar

Guest of Honour for the evening was Minister of Tourism YB Dato Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen, and Royal Patron Tunku Laxamana of Negeri Sembilan Tunku Naquiyuddin Ibni Tuanku Ja’afar. Together with Organizing Chairman Dato Steve Day, they cut through a massive 12-foot high chef’s hat, marking the official entry into the ballroom.

As soon as they stepped in with the excited guests, they were greeted by sounds of clanging pots and pans from a gang of chefs, backed by a full Latin band and Festival Master Chefs waiting to greet them on stage.

The theme for this year “It’s Raining Chefs!” – a deliberately lighthearted tagline coined by Dato’ Steve Day, the Festival’s Organising Chairman, aimed at giving the Festival universal appeal. All 28 participating restaurants created specially themed stations to showcase their Festival dishes, some reflecting the MIGF theme, some an identical representation of their restaurant and others reaching as high as the ceiling of the grand ballroom.

The two thousand VIP guests included royalty, ambassadors, captains of the industry, leading corporate figures, local and international media as well as travel and food writers. Add to the mix celebrities, social movers and shakers and big boys of the food & beverage industry.

And in a moment’s notice unbeknownst to the Guest of Honour, an explosion of confetti was released into the air and just as immediately Dato’ Steve and Tunku Naquiyuddin came to the rescue by opening umbrellas over the Minister’s head.

The Minister was then taken on a tour of the Festival Restaurants beginning with West Lake Garden Chinese Restaurant from Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, who were the venue sponsor for the Gala Launch.

Conceptualised and first introduced in 2001 to revitalize a sleepy fine dining sector, and past winner of the Pacific Air Travel Association Gold Award for Marketing, MIGF has made hundreds of people in countries throughout the world aware of Malaysia’s fine dining capabilities. Now an integral part of Tourism Malaysia’s “Fabulous Food 1 Malaysia” strategy, foodies everywhere can make a date with Festival restaurants to enjoy these once-in-a-year signature menus at competitive prices and at the same time enjoy bulk booking discounts and room night offers amongst other exciting promotions and offers.

Spent quality time practicing the delightful British tradition playing tea party with a bunch of lovely people at Green Treats Delicatessen, Swiss Garden Hotel & Residences just three days ago. The desserts were delectable, definitely the acme of perfection to go along with their hot cups of nicely-brewed coffee and fragrant tea. A happy ending indeed!

First up for appetizer. The Kaki Motoyaki is just amazingly delicious! Freshly baked oysters and the cheese on top just melted with it the second I put it in my mouth. Everyone went “Oishii!” after the first shell fish.

Sashimis! Chef Amy Zakaria, the sous chef of Kofuku who was dining with us at the table taught us that we should eat the Tuna sashimi first before we salivate the others.

Mmm…a little yummylicious surprise served in front of me.

Look at my hearty plate of Teppayanki Moriawase! They were so many delicious little Teppanyaki food in it, heartwarming indeed! *hearts*

I’m not a big fan of green tea ice-cream, but this scoop of their homemade dessert is so good that I licked it off clean! Creamy, milky and not overly sweet, just nice for me to enjoy my plate of dessert.

Suckling Piglet with Prawn Paste and Crispy Fresh Crab Meat Spring Roll Combination

A combination of roasted suckling piglet with prawn paste and crispy fresh crabmeat spring roll (paired with Eight Treasures Chinese Tea). The mildly sweet and visually colourful eight treasures tea, helps to open up appetite and starts off the meal with sweetness signifies the sweet gourmet experience ahead.

I must admit that although the suckling piglet with prawn paste was a little disppointing since I thought I was placing a big piece of roasted melt-in-your-mouth-pork at first instead of the prawn paste with only the suckling piglet skin on top, the other crispy fresh crab meat spring roll was a definite thumbs up! Crispy golden outer layer that gave me the satisfying crunch during my first bite with the salivating flavourful yet juicy crab meat in it got me all excited and couldn’t wait for the next dish to be served!

Eight Treasures Chinese Tea

Double Boiled Baby Superior Shark’s Fin with “Ling Zhi” and Chicken

Double boiled “Ling Zhi” and chicken paired with Chinese Oolong Tea. The mildness of Oolong tea helps washes away the bitterness in the taste of the “ling zhi”, allowing the taste of lingzhi to be bearable in the soup. Ling Zhi has plenty of health benefits with one of them being anti tumor which makes it beneficial to drink.

Among all the double boiled soup that I’ve tasted before, this one here with ”ling zhi” was my first. I would not say that the taste of “ling zhi” (shown in above picture) is bitter, but it was very special enough for me to keep sipping the simmering healthy soup spoonful by spoonful, trying to recognise that exotic taste of it. In fact, I thought it tasted so much like the Marmite or Bovril soup I used to make at home when I was a little kid, with an addition of the strong flavour of chicken essence in it. Love!

Grilled Crystal Prawn with Yunnan Ham

Grilled crystal prawn with Yunnan ham paired with Chinese Jasmine Tea. The freshness in the prawn and the mild saltiness and sweetness in the Yunnan ham is being balanced by the fragrant Jasmine tea.

iRate: 8/10

It might not look like a jumbo prawn, but that was definitely a very meaty crystal prawn I was very much enjoying. Although it’s stated there “grilled crystal prawn” but in fact, I did not see any sign of the prawn being grilled. It was more like a 5second boiled prawn to me because the meat was so juicyly fresh and crunchy the first bite was oh, heavenly! Not to mention that the chef was creative enough to pair the prawn with thin slices of salty Yunnan Ham right next to it, since they did not need to flavour the prawn with any seasonings as there was already a subtle sweetness due to the freshness of the shellfish itself.

The correct way to eat it. The combination of the Yunnan ham and the meaty prawn was really good.

My all time favourite Jasmine Tea. Extremely addicted to the flower scent.

Stewed Lamb Shank with Chinese Parsley

Stewed lamb shank with Chinese parsley, paired with Chinese Pu Er Tea. The lamb shank, is the heaviest course in the whole menu and is settled with Pu Er Tea to remove the feeling of oiliness in the dish and balances well with the soft lamb shank sauce infused spinach.

When it comes to a stewed lamb shank like this, it is always a Western dish we are expecting. Today, Chef Chan Kwok creatively make it into a hearty Cantonese cuisine one will never forget. The meat was so soft and tender although I did think that the texture was ironically similar to a chicken thigh meat. The sauce that was drenched in it was incredibly mouth-watering to eat with. Not too flavourful or salty, just nice for you to taste the slight gaminess of the well-cooked lamb along with the soft spinach underneath. You will instantly know that this is a very satisfying chinese cuisine lamb shank that you are eating when you consume the first mouthful of it, and not the Western one that we usually order. Bravo chef, although it might be the heaviest dish but it certainly is the best among all!

Minced Pork Fried Rice and Preserved Radish

Minced pork fried rice with crispy rice and preserved radish, paired with Chinese Pu Er Tea. Towards the end of the meal, the rice dish is best paired with Pu Er Tea and to avoid the feeling of heaviness.

It is not easy to cook a perfect plate of fried rice. Or should I say, I’m not easily satisfied with a simple plate of fried rice. My favourite has always been this “Egg yolk luncheon meat fried rice” from a hawker stall near my place. So the first thought of the last dish was “meh..it’s just another plate of fried rice” followed by “think I’m just gonna pretend to try a mouthful and that is it” And well of course, it did not end up that way. In fact, I finished everything. Not a grain left, that is. It might not appear to be as flavourful as I expected it to be, but it was the crispy rice that caught my attention. Some sort of crackers that chef creatively fried together with the minced pork and preserved radish. Every bite was crr..crr..crunchy and addictive! Yum!

Chilled mango puree with sago and strawberries topped with Vanilla ice-cream for dessert.

iRate: 10/10

A perfect 10 from me! I can’t tell you how much I am in love with this simple plate of dessert right above. Mango puree, sago, strawberries and vanilla ice-cream? Never really thought that the love-hate relationship of sweet and sour taste could make such good combination for us to salivate! No wonder everyone at the table that night kept telling each other “oh this is good!” or “I love the dessert!” etc. So did I, of course. And I might probably be the one who mentioned that the most.
